The reason the record still stands stands is simple and a lucky one for us:

They don't run that race anymore!!

I don't know about a record but I remember Craig Dana running up the hill at Weeburn CC and I've never seen anyone run up a hill that fast since. Of course 3 Darien police were right behind him. One of the officers commented that Craig ran like a gazelle.

Jim- as a Marine, you guys were taught not to run! But who taught Fenichell how to toss that saucer?

In our prime, I think we could hold our own at 4 x 220 against today's kids.  After all, only Hartford Public could beat us four little whitebreads in '69.

The DHS record for the 4 x220 at 1:31 recorded by you, Tinker, Poccia and John Fitzsimmons (’70) still stands because the race was measured in yards (4 x 220 yards). But whitebread or not, let’s compare it to the DHS record for the 4 x 200 meter at 1:30.9, run in 1979. Converting 880 yards to meters, the 1969 race is 804.672 meters. 800 meters is 99.42%, for a comparable time for the 1969 team of 1:30.472, still the fastest time in either race recorded at the Darien High School!

Way to do the math, Heuval!  I knew we had it.

Paul Hendrickson and I had a fun afternoon at the New England High School Track & Field Championships on 6/8.  Saw some great performances, including a 1st place finish and new meet record in the girl's long jump by DHS's Catherine Lacy.  And, if I didn't know that Mark Tinker was on a business trip, I could have sworn that was him anchoring the 4 x 400 relay.

Oh yeah, man.  I saw him too.  The field went dark.  A sizzle of lightning and, at the final hand-off........ a cloud of smoke.  Then this bald guy comes shearing down the last 20 and everyone else in his dust.  Who was that guy?

I quit believing this story when I read Tinker was on a business trip!

Steve and I saw some great performances including a 24'11" long jump from a guy from Massachusetts who looked like Paul Hendrickson, but jumped 2' - 3' farther.  Steve left before the 3200, but Alex Ostberg (looks like red-headed Geoff Eaton) a DHS sophomore finished in fourth place in 9:12.74, after running second for most of the race.  A DHS freshman Armstrong Noonan ran in the High School Nationals in Greensboro, NC and clocked a 4:35.79 in the freshman mile this last weekend.

What a wonderful article about Mardie.  And it is all true.  She is one of the most amazing people I know.  She is brilliant, tri-lingual (maybe quatre), sings professionally. teaches autistic kids, is athletic and in a pinch she can tune up your car!
